At Wavelength, we’re all about clear communication. So, we’re delighted that Canada’s proposing new plain language standards for the federal government and federally regulated entities (see the full list here). These standards are designed to make information accessible to all.
What is plain language?
Plain language is writing that is understood by its intended reader on a first reading.
“Clear, straightforward expression, using only as many words as are necessary. It is language that avoids obscurity, inflated vocabulary and convoluted construction. It is not baby talk, nor is it a simplified version of language.” —Dr. Robert Eagleson
Why plain language matters: The goal is simple: to ensure that everyone can find, understand, and use the information they need. This is especially crucial for people with disabilities who often encounter obstacles in accessing information.
