Learning & Development Director – Toronto

Wavelength has an exciting new opportunity for an experienced  Learning & Development Director to join our growing team of stars. Reporting to the President, you help design and develop our training products, oversee our team of 20 exceptional trainersand support our sales team.  

We’ve been in business for 50 years, providing writing, presentation and meeting skills training to our clients across Canada and the US. Our head office is in Guelph, Ontario. You’ll be at head office at least 2 days/week and working virtually the rest of the time. 

 As L & D Director, you:  

Develop and Maintain our Workshop Materials 

  • Become an expert in our core workshops
  • Customize materials to meet clients’ needs, when necessary 
  • Create new materials that complement our training portfolio 
  • Adapt classroom training to virtual platforms 
  • Help develop annual goals and product plans  
  • Review evaluation forms from all learning events to monitor the effectiveness of materials and trainers 
  • Help roll out new and updated workshop materials 
  • Help create pre and postworkshop documentation, e.g. pre-workshop questionnaires, invitations, preparation instructions, online evaluations  
  • Stay current with training knowledge, trends, methods and technology 

Lead the Training Team  

  • Conduct train-the-trainer sessions to certify our trainers  
  • Lead recruiting efforts when we hire new trainers 
  • Communicate to the team when we add new or update existing products, tools and workshops 
  • Co-teach with trainers on a regular basis 
  • Provide coaching to ensure our training team is best-in-class  
  • Work with the scheduling team to distribute classroom days fairly 

Support the Sales Team 

  • Provide your product expertise when the sales team needs help fitting our solutions to client needs. 
  • Attend sales meetings (face-to-face or virtual) when necessary  
  • Recommend trainers for special workshops and assignments 
  • Certify trainers for client licensing agreements 

Deliver Training  

  • Deliver 50 training days per year 

Required Skills & Experience 

  • excellent written communication skills—professional experience an asset  
  • strong oral and presentation skills 
  • exceptional facilitation skills  
  • proven experience leading a training team 
  • demonstrated knowledge of adult learning principles 
  • proven ability to multitask and prioritize effectively  
  • demonstrated ability to work on own initiative, with minimal supervision, within a fast-paced environment 
  • comfortable working virtually 3 days each week  
  • strong attention to detail  
  • strong computer skills including Office 365 applications and online meeting and webinar programs (e.g., zoom)   
  • knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud an asset 
  • knowledge and proven experience in all aspects of the training development cycle, including needs analysis, design, delivery, follow-up and evaluation  
  • experience designing virtual, online or blended learning solutions 
  • University degree—graduate degree preferred. 
  • minimum 8 years related work experience
