Communication Skills Coaching

Coaching is a great option if you want training that’s customized just for you, and scheduled at your convenience.

We start by diagnosing your writing or presentations and determine exactly what you need. We teach you only what’s necessary and help you apply your new skills to your own writing and presentations.

Because coaching is so targeted, it tends to take less time. Often, three 2-hour meetings are sufficient to produce noticeable improvement.

It’s best to separate the meetings by a week to give you time to digest and apply your new skills.

Writing Skills Coaching Process

Wavelength’s one-to-one coaching sessions are tailored to each client’s specific learning needs, usually in a three-phase approach.

First Phase: Chemistry & Diagnosis

The first coaching phase involves a formal diagnosis to identify the client’s specific learning needs. We will ask them to send us some samples of their writing, which will be reviewed by their Wavelength coach. The client and coach will schedule a short telephone meeting to establish chemistry, clarify objectives and identify strengths and weaknesses. The coach may also talk to the client’s manager and others who can provide feedback about their writing skills.

Based on the information you provided, the client and coach will collaboratively establish objectives and a timetable for the coaching sessions.

Second Phase: Coaching

The second phase involves structured coaching sessions supported by exercises and examples from a Wavelength course workbook to introduce the client to our framework, skills and vocabulary. This phase will help the client meet the specific learning objectives identified in phase one. They will learn to think like their readers – especially the need for reading concise, strategic documents that focus on the big picture. By comparing the differences between muddy and reader-focused documents, they will become aware of the writing techniques that will make documents more concise, quicker to read and easier to understand.

Between coaching sessions, the client will continue to practice the new skills and techniques in day-to-day work. They will also share drafts with their Wavelength coach, who will provide feedback and guidance.

This phase can be handled through face-to-face meetings or virtual/telephone meetings. We require a minimum of 2 hours for face-to-face meetings.

Third Phase: Follow-up and Reinforcement

The third phase involves feedback and additional coaching based on a set of agreed upon criteria and the original learning objectives identified in phase one. The client will participate in a series of electronic coaching sessions where they will send real letters and reports to the coach, who will send written feedback based on a checklist of best practices. With this approach, the client will receive timely feedback about their work and have the chance to apply the feedback immediately. The coach will provide additional suggestions for continued improvement.

Finally, the Wavelength coach will provide an update about their progress, and we will mutually decide if the client would benefit from any further coaching.

Presentations Skills Coaching Process

Our one-on-one Presentation Skills Coaching is for any level employee who needs to improve their presentation skills. We tailor our coaching sessions to the individual’s specific needs, usually in a three-phased approach.

First Phase: Chemistry & Diagnosis

The first coaching phase involves a formal diagnosis to identify your employee’s specific needs. The coach will talk to client to establish chemistry, clarify initial objectives and identify strengths and weaknesses. The coach will also talk to the employee’s manager and others who can provide feedback about the their presentation skills.

This phase can be handled through structured interviews, or telephone meetings.

Second Phase: Coaching

The second phase involves a structured coaching workshop supported through video and tailored coaching. This phase will help your employee meet the specific learning objectives identified in phase one. They will deliver a presentation and the coach will video the practice. They will then watch the video and the coach will provide feedback. The coach will help the employee set goals and then learn and practice the techniques that will polish the employee’s presentation skills. The feedback and learning will focus on both content and delivery. We will support them through videotaping and tailored coaching.

Third Phase: Follow-up and Reinforcement

The third phase involves feedback and additional coaching based on a set of agreed-upon criteria and the original learning objectives identified in phase one. The coach will provide additional suggestions for continued improvement. In this session, the coach will look for specific changed behaviors and practices through:

  1. sitting in on a presentation; or
  2. receiving a taped copy of a presentation.
