Coaching

Communication Skills Coaching

Coaching is a great option if you want training that’s customized just for you, and scheduled at your convenience.

We start by diagnosing your writing or presentations and determine exactly what you need. We teach you only what’s necessary and help you apply your new skills to your own writing and presentations.

Because coaching is so targeted, it tends to take less time. Often, three 2-hour meetings are sufficient to produce noticeable improvement.

It’s best to separate the meetings by a week to give you time to digest and apply your new skills.

Writing Skills Coaching Process

Wavelength’s one-to-one coaching sessions are tailored to each client’s specific learning needs, usually in a three-phase approach.

First Phase: Chemistry & Diagnosis

First we figure out what you need. We ask the learner to to send us some samples of their writing, which the coach reviews. The coach then reaches out to schedule a short telephone meeting to get acquainted, and clarify objectives and expectations. The coach may also talk to the learner’s manager and others who can provide feedback about their writing skills.

Based on this, the client and coach will collaboratively establish objectives and a timetable for the coaching sessions.

Second Phase: Coaching

Structured coaching sessions include exercises and examples from a Wavelength course workbook to introduce the learner to our framework, relevant skills and vocabulary. Coaching helps you meet the specific learning objectives identified in phase one, by mastering writing techniques that make documents more concise, quicker to read and easier to understand.

Between coaching sessions, the learner continues to practice new skills and techniques in day-to-day work. They will also share drafts with their Wavelength coach, who provides feedback and guidance.

The coaching sessions can be face-to-face or virtual. We usually find 3 two-hour meetings are sufficient.

Third Phase: Follow-up and Reinforcement

To ensure learning transfer,  learners participate in a series of electronic coaching sessions where they send real letters and reports to the coach, who in turn sends written feedback based on a checklist of best practices. With this approach, the learner receives timely feedback about their work and has the chance to apply the feedback immediately.

Finally, the Wavelength coach provides an update about their progress, and we will mutually decide if the client would benefit from any further coaching.

Presentations Skills Coaching Process

Our one-on-one Presentation Skills Coaching is for any level employee who needs to improve their presentation skills. We tailor our coaching sessions to the individual’s specific needs, usually in a three-phased approach.

First Phase: Chemistry & Diagnosis

This phase can be handled through structured interviews, or telephone meetings.

First we figure out what you need. The coach has in introductory meeting with the learner to get acquainted, and clarify objectives and expectations. The coach may also talk to the learner’s manager and others who can provide feedback about their presentation skills.

Second Phase: Coaching

Based on this, the client and coach will collaboratively establish objectives and a timetable for the coaching sessions.

The second phase involves a structured coaching workshop supported through video and tailored coaching. This phase helps the learner meet the objectives identified in phase one. First they deliver a presentation and the coach videotapes the practice. They then watch the video together and set goals. The coach provides presentation skills targeted to the needs of the presenter, who practices and polishes them in the coaching sessions. We provide feedback and learning to support both the content and delivery of the presentation.

Third Phase: Follow-up and Reinforcement

We provide suggestions for continued improvement when learners provide us with a recording of a presentation.
